I took Sophie to see the matinee of Gnomeo & Juliet on the final day that the Hollywood Theatre was open, after 75 years in business. From their website:
"The Fairleigh family is truly heartbroken to announce that in late May the Hollywood Theatre will be undergoing a change in ownership, largely due to increasing property taxes, HST, and the changing market for movie consumption, in which films can be downloaded for free. Thank you to all the wonderful people who have supported the Hollywood all these years. All the best to you, Vancouver film-lovers!"
When I bought our tickets, we gave the man in the ticket window a bigger-than-normal tip, with me stumbling my way through a clumsy explanation that they were our favourite theatre, and we were grateful for all they had done over the years in helping to give Kits the community feel we enjoyed. I also gave the snack bar folks a tip, which they weren't expecting - they had to go hunting for the tip jar. (Snack bar = restaurant = validation.)
I'll miss the days of sitting with Holly in a theatre without ads, in our usual spot a third of the way back, just to the right of the right-hand aisle, listening to Billie Holiday and chatting before the movie started. The best were the days where we accidentally got there too early, and got to enjoy this for 15-20 minutes.
We were only around for the tail end of the long history of the theatre, but we figure we've seen around 75 shows there, one for each year the theatre was in business. Thank you, Fairleigh family, for all the movies!
