27. Teach Sophie to read. Simple words count.

Having 6 billion books in the house is having an effect. Sophie knows most of her letters, and has a pretty good idea of the sounds most of them make - except she's having a tough time with vowels. They often come out as indistinct vowel-mush sounds. Aaauuuuuoooo. But sometimes she gets them.

We've been playing with a little magic pad, and it works great for writing short words and seeing if she can sound them out. If she gets it, or if I help her with it, I'll draw a little picture of whatever it is. She seems to enjoy it.

Here's one she got this morning, with no prompting - just naming the letters, making the sounds, and putting them together. So cool to watch, when she gets one! (And just to be clear, the drawing came after she figured it out.)

Here's to the start of a lifelong love of reading!

It's so much fun watching her learn to read! This morning, she read bat, hat, cat, mat and rat.
