For anyone out there using Pidgin as a chat client, if you recently upgraded and now find that it won't shut down cleanly, I found the answer to my problems here, about halfway down the page, talking about libpurple. So there you go.
Okay, you got me, this is mainly so I can fix this problem again when I forget what the solution was. Now the debate can rage on about the value of blogs as personal brain dumps, and whether that flies in the face of their intended use, blah blah blah.
(Note of correction: The libpurple thing apparently doesn't work if you don't have the same version of Gtk+ installed as the guy who compiled this dll. Or something. Blah blah blah. But the latest version of Pidgin (2.5.4) seems to fix the problem too.)
