Movie review: Bernie

Bernie

Bernie had a quiet, under-the-radar kind of appeal. My expectations were middling to low, because I wasn't sure whether Jack Black would slapstick his way through a seriously-intended movie, or whether he would fail at acting in serious manner. Happily, he did neither, and managed to anchor this black comedy with a solid bit of non-goofus acting.

I quite liked the way it bounced back and forth between the main story and the chorus of villagers. It really underlined the most interesting aspect of the story, the reaction of the townspeople to... well, everything that happened. And even though the fact that it's based on a true story is actually in the tagline of the movie, I somehow missed it, and only became aware of it gradually near the end of the movie - this made the DVD extras more watchable than they usually are.

I'm officially adding Richard Linklater to my list of favourite movie-makers, and will be going back over his IMDB list to check out some of his older stuff that I've missed.

Ok, I know you're trying not to give away anything about the movie, but after I read this review, I still don't know what the movie is about! What about giving a general overview of the plot?
