12. Bike to work and back 40 work days in a row.

My original goal for this was 60 days, but Holly reminded me that this was not just the two months I had in my head - at 4 work days a week (at most), this would take roughly 15 weeks - more than three months! So I scaled it back to 40 days, and I just finished my run yesterday!

I'm mainly impressed with the fact that my bike held up for that many trips in a row. Usually, I would have had a couple flat tires and several tune-ups during that amount of (biking) time, but I think I made it through with maybe one tune-up. I attribute this mainly to our awesome local bike place, Dan's Bike Shop, as Dan does a great job keeping our bikes in tip-top shape - and what's more, he turned me on to these kevlar tires which I don't think have gone flat since I've bought them. Excellent tires. Even so, there were days when my bike was creaking like an old wooden galleon under full sail, and my chain was twitching around, trying to decide what gear it liked the most. But it made it all the way through - nice work, bike!

I bused to work on May 8th, 2009, and then biked (there and back) every day* that I worked after that until now: May 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 27th, 29th, June 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 29th, July 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, and one bonus day, today, July 23rd. That makes 41, so I have a buffer day, just in case I counted wrong.

The * asterisk above indicates a justification slash cheat that I am allowing myself, based on full disclosure. On June 19th, we went to the Island for a train ride and a Father's Day picnic, so I had to leave my bike at work that Friday and bus to the ferry. That also meant that I couldn't bike to work on the Monday after the weekend. To make up for this, I (a) walked to work on the Monday, so as not to take transit, and (b) biked to work and back on my day off (Tuesday) to make up for the missed trips. I'm waving off the offside, and you can't argue with the ref.

Congratulations! You have accomplished a mighty feat! As judge of the 101 Lists, I deem that you have met all the requirements of this goal and that your extra effort of walking to work and cycling to work on a non-work day more than compensated for your ferry-related lapse in continuity.
